What a Piece of Work

While in Paris a few years ago, I was excited to have an opportunity to visit the Louvre.  This museum, originally constructed as a palace, houses many of the worlds most treasured works of art from the various periods.  I enjoyed seeing such works as Michaelangelo’s David, the Venus de Milo as well as works by Rembrant.  One particular piece that I was looking forward to seeing, is perhaps the most well-known painting in the world.  It is Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

I was very surprised when I walked into the salon where the painting was displayed.  It was no surprise that there was a huge crowd gathered, studying the painting.  It was no surprise that the painting was encased in a safety structure for security and for environmental control.  What WAS a surprise, was the size of the portrait.  It was really pretty small.  I had envisioned a somewhat large painting.  Yet, it is only 30″ in high by 20 7/8″ wide.  Although this size was not as imposing and magnificent as some of the others hanging throughout the museum, it has still continued to have a huge impact upon the art world.

Why do I bother to write about this?  I am reminded of the words of Paul in Ephesians 2:10.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

God is creating in each of us, a masterpiece, as He works to make us like His Son.  This “re-creation” process is intended to produce a work that brings glory to the “artist.”  The reason?  So that we can do the very things that He has planned for us all along.  We may seem “small” in the world of influencers, or we may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but we are nothing less than a masterpiece in the hands of our God who wishes to impact our world through us.

Are you a “piece of work?”  Remember, as Christ is at work in you, God is making you His piece of work…a masterpiece.  One that the world may see and marvel about how good God is.

How is God molding you as His masterpiece?  What has He changed in you that is making you His masterpiece?
